Apple's VR headset with LiDAR said to launch in Q1 2022

Another new report suggests that Apple's VR headset will arrive next year.

JPMorgan Chase Securities Technology Industry Analyst Yang Weilun claims that Apple may release a VR headet as early as the first quarter of 2022. The design of the VR headset is said to be similar to existing offerings, and it is expected to come with six lenses, LiDAR, and a time-of-flight sensor.

As with most Apple products, the upcoming VR headset is targeted at the premium market segment and likely to be more expensive than existing offerings. The manufacturing cost of the VR headset is estimated to be at least US$500.

TSMC, Largan, Jin Guoguang, Yujingguang and Yangmingguang are among the suppliers which are gearing up to supply components for the VR headset. As for the Apple Glass, it is unlikely to be launched in the next 12 to 18 months due to the highly complex supply chain management and industrial design specifications.

Bloomberg reported two weeks ago that Apple plans to launch the VR headset as early as 2022. It is meant to be an expensive, niche precursor to the more mainstream AR glasses.
